Greebers
Although Greebers died last year, he still holds a very special place in my heart. I hope his story will influence others to adopt an older cat.
ALIASES: Smokey, Greebo, Greeber-Deebers, Ack-Ack, Ackerbee, Treat-Seeking Missile.
LIKED: Treats, having his bald spots rubbed, sitting on my lap while I typed, slamming my keyboard drawer shut while I was typing, treats, getting baths from Mr. Meezer, more treats.
DISLIKES:
Having us pay attention to anything else but him, getting baths by Mr. Meezer, not getting treats.
This was my little gray pal Greebers. Ben and I found him and his partner in crime, Mr. Meezer, at a PetSmart in Billings, Montana. We were in Billings on a shopping trip and stopped in at the PetSmart to look at cat toys for our other furkids. I noticed that the local pet shelter had set up cages with pets that were up for adoption. Despite Ben's warning that "No good can come of this", I went and looked at the adoptees. There were loads of kittens, and several families were in line to adopt one. I saw a cage on the floor with two cats huddled together, one a Russian Blue named Smokey and the other a Siamese named Prince. The sign on the cage said they were a pair and that they were eleven years old and had been put up for adoption because the owner's child was allergic to cats. While I was standing there several people came along and said "Oh, look at these two! Aren't they beautiful?", then when they saw the sign they said "EWWW!! Eleven years old!" and walked away. I felt so sorry for them! I started crying and left the store. Ben came out to the car and saw how upset I was. He went back in the store and bought a cat carrier and both boys. Because they were declawed, we were afraid to put them at the mercy of the rest of our brood. We separated part of the house for them. They hid whenever we were around for about a month. Eventually, they came out of hiding and decided that they would keep us. Smokey became Greebers, the treat-seeking missile!
Greebers was probably the sweetest cat on the planet. After having Greebers for a couple years, I became ill and tired most of the time. (I later found out that I had developed Type II Diabetes). When I would lay down for a nap, Greebers would lay under the covers with his head on my pillow and sleep with me. When he slept, his little pink tongue crept out just a little, and he snored amazingly loud for such a little guy! I loved to lay there and watch him sleep. He never failed to raise my spirits. His unconditional love and companionship helped me through a very difficult time.
I had Greebers for almost six years. He died suddenly last fall of what appeared to be to be a heart attack. I miss him terribly still. If it is possible to have a kitty "soul mate" Greebers was mine. Every cat I own for the rest of my life will be compared to my little gray pal.
I hope that anyone who reads this will be inspired to open their heart and home to an older cat. I feel like any good deed I did by taking in Greebers and Meezer was rewarded a hundred times over.
